The Milk Barn
Painted by Adeline Van der Meeren

The Barn

Early one morning
As was his custom usually
Pa went to the barn
To fulfill his daily duty.
Milking cows and gathering eggs
Was a part of his life
Ingrained in his being
Like loving his wife.
No one questioned
That he was long gone
Until noontime came
Ma felt something wrong.
When Pa was found
He held an egg in his hand
Unbroken, like his love,
When he left this land.
We might consider
This story so sad
But the old man died
With a heart that was glad,
Glad he could choose
Until his dying day
To love his family
By serving them this way,
For the barn was truly
A special part of his life
Like loving his family
And Kate Emma his wife.
