Interior Decorating
With binoculars
I visibly see
The bald eagle
Working diligently
At her hefty nest.
I eagerly watch her
Wondering if she knows
That I am spying,
Interested
In this creature
Of God
That finds her way
Back home
From year to year,
Following winters journey
Towards open waters
Where she may feed
Along the Bras d'Or Lakes.
Today she is organized
Adding new material
To the large nest,
Spring-cleaning
Or interior decorating
We might say.
I send a prayer
Heavenward
To wish her well
And welcome her home
To our nest once again.

March 20, 2001.After I read the above poem to one of my daughters she asked me, "Who
says that only female eagles do the interior decorating." I laughed, and
told her that I didn't know that the poem was going to be anything
about interior decorating when I started writing. I guess that I had
chosen to refer to the eagle as female out of a sense of familiarity.
It just happened that she was doing spring house-cleaning or interior
decorating.
