    *************************************************************************

April 26th is the Feast day of Our Lady of Good Counsel, so it seems appropriate that we give thanks for the blessings we receive through CWL, by dedicating this April newsletter to the honor of the Blessed Mother and her Son Jesus. May you enjoy our sharing and always feel welcomed to join us in our efforts for God and Canada.

Message from our Spiritual Advisor, Rev Francis J. Abbass Holy week celebrates the source of our joy as Christians, namely Jesus Christ lifted up on the cross and risen from the tomb. At this particular time I am pleased to thank and congratulate the CWL for all the ways in which they serve this faith community. They do all things superbly, they add an appreciated element of Christian joy to our parish life. Happy Easter! Francis J. Abbass -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Message from our President, Agnes Morris The challenge of becoming President of St. Mary's Catholic Women's League has been accomplished with ease by the support and effort of the membership and gives me great joy and satisfaction to move forward in the coming months in an ever changing world as we move to the next millennium. Changes as we have never seen before are taking place in every aspect of our lives. It takes great courage to move with these changes and still display the very essence of our Christian values. By our charitable examples let us all reach out in whatever role is required of us. Our charity in its excellence never fails. Thank you so much for your confidence and the opportunity to lead the CWL for the coming year. Sincerely, Agnes Morris. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of parishioners whose loved ones have died since our last newsletter and we assure you that you and your loved ones have been remembered in our prayers.

*Doing God's work, is doing God's will, God's Way*

What have we been doing? Since the new executive of the St. Mary's CWL was installed during a church service in the fall of 1997 we have been actively involved the life of our parish. There are presently 71 members in the parish CWL. We began our meetings in October at the home of Theresa Axworthy where we received a very warm welcome. Following are some of the highlights of the past year.
On November 1st,two members gained a greater understanding and enthusiasm for the CWL by attending a Leadership Development Day at St. Anthony Daniel Parish...On November 22nd we hosted a successful Fall Fair where many members and parishioners joined together in fellowship and fun to raise awareness of CWL and create an atmosphere of community...In December some 60 women from the parish gathered together for a lovely Pre-Christmas Dinner in the Parish Hall - with a guest speaker from Social Services, Adrian White, educating us on the human devastation of child abuse. An evening of growth and fellowship was enhanced by the singing led by Ethel Poole and entertainment by our spiritual advisor and a few of our members...CWL has continued to offer personal prayers and masses for our deceased members and their families...Joined in prayers on ecumenical prayer lines for the sick and for special intentions...Hosted lunch and tea in the parish hall after funeral masses when families accepted our invitation...Sent cards to, and baked for and/or visited the sick whenever possible...Two members continue to serve as directors of the Parish Youth Group and attended the Youth Conference in Rome where Pope John Paul 11 welcomed everyone...Some members continue to serve on the Art & Environment Group thus participating in care for the church...Some members serve as Eucharistic Ministers...Some members sing for funerals when asked...Two members are presently serving on Parish Council...Letters have been written and phone calls made to government officials and the media voicing concerns re education, health care etc...Some members are participating in the Adult Religious Education sessions on Sunday nights in the parish hall.

A look at the wider picture of CWL reminds us of the positive influence that CWL is having on society. Throughout the Diocese of Antigonish and beyond our activities involve support of many kinds and here are a "few areas" of involvement: Spiritual Development of members... Diocesan Commitments... Development and Peace... Right to Life & Walks for Life...A Window To New Life Antigonish Diocesan Society... Breast Cancer research... Mass For Shut-ins... Parish Support & Community Life Support... Bringing Resolutions to Gov't attention Education/scholarships/awards.

We sincerely thank the women of the parish for their very valuable support. We welcome ladies to join the CWL at any time and we wish you and your families a very Happy Easter.
